“Have you ever had that Solange moment? Don’t touch my hair don’t touch my crown.”

“Have you ever had that Solange moment? Don’t touch my hair don’t touch my crown.”

Have you ever had that “Solange” moment”? It’s that, “don’t touch my hair don’t touch my crown” feeling. I recently came back from vacation in New Orleans and felt like a walking advertisement for tourist curiosity. For the summer months I decided to get a protective style- box braids that stopped at the bottom of my lower back. My style was picked out of a magazine in the shop. I paid a reasonable price, one hundred and fifty dollars. I decided to go full force and get some color. The colors I used were number 27, 613, and 24- all shades of blonde, for those who don’t know. You couldn’t tell me nothing. The lady braiding my hair did it just right. My colors blended nicely. I was in rare form. Well, it took a minute to feel it. My braids were cute, but tight and heavy.

I received plenty of compliments at first but was never approached by someone to touch it. I love braids. I would go to a shop and get my hair braided and be amazed by the detail and styles. I normally would get micro braids so I would be in the shop for a while. It is a true craft . Let’s admit it, though, the first few days will be the best face lift ever. Sometimes they’re so tight that if you listen closely you can hear your baby hairs crying in the background. This is the reason why I got my hair braided a week before my Vacation. This is also the reason you just don’t go touching anyone’s hair. Its cute, but it hurts too.

The moment I stepped off the plane an older lady with a deep southern accent said “can I touch your hair?” My eyes opened up big at her. I was a little shocked. Never been asked by anyone to touch my hair before, other than friends or family. Even then, I’m like “Please don’t” . In all my years getting braids, I had never been asked before by a stranger to touch my hair. She seemed intrigued, however, and before I knew it, without any approval, Grandma went for it. “Awe, it’s amazing” I smiled at her but was singing in my head “Don’t touch my hair”. I must have played that song the entire trip.

It’s just my opinion. I’m not a fan of touching a stranger’s hair. First of all, “Gross.” I love curls on babies but couldn’t imagine walking up to a mother and combing my fingers through their child’s head. This took place throughout the entire trip. I had even some men trying to come for my braids. A lot of compliments came from foreign women. All older women, some from countries as far as Australia. Touchy is not the word.

Truthfully ,I was thankful to receive such nice compliments. Oddly I felt like they were playing the role of my Puerto Rican grandma. She loves to touch my hair. Inside I wanted to tell her “no” but the fear getting popped by the chancletas scares me. Honestly I didn’t know how to respond. Like I said, this has never happened to me before by a stranger. I have to be honest and so point out that I felt violated. Some people didn’t even say hello first. I didn’t want to come off as rude, especially in an unknown environment. There is a deeper issue when it comes to touching someones hair, but what about manners too? I get it, braids are beautiful in any color, hair texture, or style but please don’t touch my hair, it’s my Crown.

Use The L.O.C Method for the Best Curls

Twist outs are great, but if you have fine, low-density hair; you may prefer a more voluminous look. Clipping in extensions to add length offers an easy way to create fuller, protective styles with this fun look without having to commit to a full wig or hairstyle.  “An easy way to add volume, versatility, and length for those looking to spruce up their summer hair game; a twist out on clip- ins for natural hair is a simple way to blend your own hair with the extensions,” explains Alikay Naturals Co-Founder & CEO, Rochelle Graham-Campbell.  The inventor of the popular L.O.C Method (Liquid. Oil. Cream) for moisturizing textured tresses, Rochelle’s “BlackOnyx77” YouTube channel has received over 15 million views since launching in 2008.  The beauty mogul and influencer shared her tips below for using this method to create a well-defined, fluffy curl, twist out with clip ins.   STEP #1Wash hair with a shampoo that won’t cause build up, like the Alikay Naturals Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo and used the Avocado Cream Moisture Repairing Mask to deep condition. Cleanse your clip ins with a co-wash, like the Alikay Naturals CoWash Me Cleansing Conditioner. STEP #2Using a full set of 14” – 16” inch clip ins, start clipping the hair in being sure to evenly distribute the clip in hair so that it is balanced with your natural hair.  This will help to ensure that they blend naturally.   STEP #3Prep the hair by spraying it with a leave-in conditioner, like the Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave In Conditioner and follow a few drops of your favorite oil (we recommend the Alikay Naturals Argan Oil Silkener); then layer in a cream, like the Alikay Naturals Shea Yogurt Hair Moisturizer to help create defined curls.  Be careful not to oversaturate your hair with product to avoid weighing it down. STEP #4Section hair into four parts and use butterfly hair clips to hold the sections that you aren’t working with in place.  Begin twisting small sections of hair. STEP #5Set your twists by letting hair dry overnight. If sleeping on it at night, be sure to wrap the hair using a silk bonnet, like All Caps Hair or Flor Bella, to keep the twists in place. STEP #6While taking down your twists using your fingers, be sure to separate each twist into two to three parts, grabbing the hair from the root and gently pulling as you shake the hair apart.  Take a strand of the clip in hair with a strand of your own natural hair and twist the two together to make them blend seamlessly. Get the Best Edge Control for the Summer!

The day was hot and sultry. Let’s face it, ladies the summer time can be the most expensive time for your hair. Even when going for that protective style, having perfect edges are a must. Sometimes finding the perfect edge control is like finding a soulmate. When you find a good one and you want to lock it down, You say to yourself, “ Yes this one is perfect, it’s all natural, so it has to be the best one for me.”  You go home excited ready to lay down the edges and hours later you have been betrayed. The selfies you’ve taken earlier that day don’t match with the ones you’re taking now because you have a glazed mess around your forehead. Even worst, you’ll get what I like to call an “Edge control halo”.

Social media will make us all believe that all edges lay.  This not always true. All edge controls are not created equal. My best advice is to try some samples and experiment. If after a few hours your head feels like a glazed ham, you know it’s not in control. It can get frustrating. I recommend after applying using styling strips. I use these to hold down my edges especially while getting dressed and sleeping. This technique is also good for absorbing excess build up. I figure if I got to go to war for my baby hairs, I should be prepared for the battle. Nothing is like using a scarf to lay down your edges and a tiny brush to smooth it down.

Remember finding the best edge control can be difficult!   Don’t let pricing be a deciding factor. There are plenty of reasonably priced edge controls that will give you your desired look. I’m currently obsessed with the 24hour EBIN Edge Tamer. Applying this wet or even dry I still get the same results, and I slay all day. For additional hold, I use the favorite Gorilla Snot gel “punk”. For best results, I recommend that you remove any build up you may have a previous style to prevent clogging of pores and a caked up look around your edges.  Remember to keep up the good fight when no edge control formed against you shall prosper.
