Type 4: Kinky Hair

Defined and tightly coiled “s” pattern. It retains moisture well but is prone to dryness due to its high density.

Hair Products:  Gentle sulfate free shampoos, conditioners, and rich creamy products or butters will be helpful for keeping hair moisturized.

Has more “Z” strands than “s” strands, less defined curl pattern, tightly coiled, coarse, thin, wiry, and has a more fluffy appearance. This hair type often experiences shrinkage 70%-75% of its actual hair length. Type 4b can hold altered styles well in comparison to Types 2, 3, or 4a hair and will benefit from protective styling and low manipulation styles, to protect from heat damage.

Mane Tip: A lot of moisture, gentle cleansers and frequent deep conditioning will be helpful for naturals with 4b hair. Practice the LOC or Method to keep coils moisturized.

4c is the tightest coiled and does not have a defined curl pattern. To define the curl pattern, coils have to be defined by styling. 4c gurus will experience shrinkage and it’s the most fragile hair and prone to breakage. It grows the same rate as other textures, but must be handled with the most care.

Porosity:

Ah, porosity, something that doesn’t get its reciprocity … lol, I tried! This is as or more important to know than your hair texture. It’s how your hair absorbs moisture. Does your hair take forever to dry or instead when you come out the shower your hair is still dry and seems waterproof.

There’s 3 porosity levels and below are methods to test your porosity.

Porosity Test:

1.Float Test: Take a few strands from your hair tools and drop them into a bowl of water. After 2-5 minutes check if your hair floats, you have low porosity, if it sinks, you have high porosity.

2.Test your strand: Take one hair strand and slide your fingers up the shaft (towards the scalp). If it feels smooth, you have low porosity hair. If the hair strand has a few bumps along the way, then you have high porosity and your cuticles are lifted (black nap.com)

Low Porosity:

I have low porosity hair. My hair takes forever to absorb water, moisture, etc…  When I LOC at night and wake up, my hair's still damp. Low porosity hair is considered healthy, often shiny and is hard to process, since it resists penetration of chemicals. It’s prone to build up from protein products since its cuticle is tightly bound with overlapping flat lying scales.

Requirements: Moisturizers rich in heavy oils: coconut oil, jojoba, shea butter and light leave-ins and hair milk. Protein-free conditioners and use humectants such as glycerin or honey.

Recommended Products: Clarifiers, light oils, and humectants: Aphogee Green Tea Shampoo, Aloe Vera Gel,  Grapeseed Oil, Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Glycerin, Argan Oil, coconut oil.

Medium Porosity:

This hair porosity requires the least amount of maintenance. It allows the right amount of moisture to enter while preventing too much from escaping. It holds styles well and can be easily chemically manipulated.

RequirementsDeep condition with protein conditioners occasionally. Also, use products on the lighter side to avoid product buildup, as heavier products are not a must have for this porosity type.

High Porosity:

High porosity is usually the result of chemical processing: relaxers, perms, and/or color. The hair cuticle is usually ridden with gaps and holes, which lets too much moisture in and too much moisture out, leaving the hair frizzy and tangling in humid weather.

Requirements: Anti-humectants to seal damage cuticle, prevent frizz. Use leave-in, moisturizers, sealers, and hair butter. Layering or combing a few products will help fill the gaps in the damage cuticles and help retain moisture and creates a barrier.

Recommended Products: Use rich products and protein: Shea Moisture Raw Shea Shampoo, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil,  Shea Butter, Aphogee Two Step Protein Treatment.
